Volunteering is a great way to meet people, learn a new skill, and make a real impact on your local community. There are many positions available for joining the ALIVE Rescue team; no matter how much or little time you can give, we will find a place for you.

Open Leadership Positions:

Graphic Design Chair

Our graphics committee designs our marketing materials, ranging anywhere from brochures, event flyers, t-shirts, or special campaigns. Duties include meeting with new graphics committee volunteers to determine strengths and help them learn the look/feel of ALIVE Rescue’s brand; coordinating assignments with graphics committee members; and reviewing and editing any graphics pieces prior to submission to the board. The ideal person would have art direction experience.

Social Media Chair

We are looking for someone to handle our social media presence.

Tasks include the following responsibilities:

  • Posting to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram; responding to comments and questions on posts; and developing ways to increase followers.
  • Collaborating with Foster Coordinators to gather information on animals in foster homes.
  • Reaching out to foster parents (via email/Facebook group) to gather info and updated pictures.  Gathering specific animal information from the foster spreadsheet.
  • Seeking out information and gathering pics/info from ALIVE volunteers about barn residents via Facebook volunteers’ page.
  • Collaborating with Fundraising team to promote events and create thank you posts for social media.
  • Visiting The Little Barn residents to take photos for social media posts.

Community Outreach Chair

This position would involve preparing and hosting community events or resources. This may include research to determine the greatest community needs; meeting with other rescues to pool resources (such as community pet days, where resources are provided to the public to keep pets in homes); contacting trainers for behavior seminars; or coordinating a pet food pantry.

Bequests and Planned Giving Chair

Bequests and Planned Giving involves individuals who designate ALIVE as a beneficiary from wills and trusts, or organizations that plan large amounts of charitable giving to non-profits throughout the year.) Duties would include responding to inquiries about planned giving from estates, organizations, and individuals; tailoring our sponsorship/planned giving packet for individual responses; finding ways to solicit for new donors, and developing website content for this program.

Corporate Sponsorship Chair

Network with and contact companies with charitable giving programs to secure sponsorships for ALIVE, possibly through “matched giving” benefits where the company matches donations made by employees.

Accountant

Help ALIVE complete our taxes! This is essential to getting funding grants. We provide the numbers; we just need an accountant to complete and file the tax forms. This position could also, but not necessarily, involve book-keeping and data entry of ALIVE’s finances.

Grant Chair

Prerequisites: Grant writing experience. Knowledge of animal rescue community in Chicago. Six month minimum commitment required. One year minimum commitment preferred. Great opportunity for someone looking to expand one’s leadership skills!

Tasks include the following responsibilities:

  • Coordinating monthly team meetings
  • Understanding the scope of programming at ALIVE Rescue
  • Communicating with Board of Directors about ongoing opportunities and tasks
  • Supporting grant team coordinators as needed
  • Tracking grant opportunities and project timelines
  • Completing assigned grants and tasks in a timely and professional manner
  • Providing follow up reports to funders
  • Onboarding new grant team members
  • Investigating new grant opportunities
  • Providing written feedback on grants as needed
  • Providing boilerplate materials to grant team members as needed

Adoption Event Lead

Prerequisites: Dog handling skills a must. Knowledge of ALIVE Rescue and our adoption procedures (will train). Organized and outgoing. Six month minimum commitment required.

Tasks include the following responsibilities:

  • Booking at least two adoption events a month
  • Being the primary event lead at adoption events
  • Recruiting and training additional event leads
  • Coordinating dogs to attend the adoption events
  • Working with the Volunteer Coordinators to staff the events
  • Being the face of ALIVE Rescue at adoption events
  • Communicating information about the adoption process and ALIVE Rescue to the public during events
  • Managing volunteers handling dogs through out the adoption event

Chair / Co-Chairs of Alive and Running Program

ALIVE Rescue is currently seeking 1-3 volunteers to get the Alive and Running program off the ground.  This is a great opportunity for those with a passion for fitness and animal rescue.  

Responsibilities include:  

  • Host informational events at gyms that partner with Alive and Running.
  • Obtain corporate sponsorships.
  • Solicit items for Alive and Running swag bags.
  • Correspond with Alive and Running registrants to include sending welcome packets, delivery of Alive and Running gear & swag bag, constant communication up until the run, sending invites to party, etc.
  • Organize Alive and Running celebration party.
  • Posting Facebook and Instagram Alive and Running content.
  • Updating Website content (adding runners and winners).
  • Overseeing the distribution of Alive and Running marketing material throughout businesses in Chicago.
  • Coordinating day of run cheering squads.
  • Research local runs in Illinois for registrants to participate in.
  • Submitting applications to large corporate runs (example:  Bank of America Marathon)

Additional Volunteer Opportunities

Little Barn Volunteers

The Little Barn is the shelter space for ALIVE Rescue and we are always in need of help to give day-to-day care to our Barn residents. Barn volunteers work hands on with dogs and cats, performing tasks ranging from walking, training, feeding and socializing animals to helping with laundry, processing donations, and cleaning. The Little Barn is the center of activity for ALIVE Rescue and provides a space for incoming dogs and cats before they are placed in foster homes, in addition to housing some of the more long-term residents that need consistent medical care or behavioral work before finding their permanent homes. In order be able to staff the barn and provide the animals consistency, we offer two shifts for volunteering each day. Barn shifts are available 9am – 12pm Sunday through Friday, 9am – 2pm Saturday, and 6pm – 9pm 7 days/week. To ensure the safety of our volunteers and animals, all volunteers at the Little Barn must be aged 21 or older.

Adoption Events
Handle and/or transport an ALIVE Rescue dog to showcase him/her at an adoption event around the city.

Transportation Committee
You will be transporting animals to and from foster homes & boarding facilities to the veterinarian and to adoption events; our biggest need for transportation help is during the daytime/weekday hours. Note: you must own your own vehicle and be willing to provide ALIVE Rescue with a copy of your auto insurance.

Webmasters
Help maintain and improve ALIVE’s website. This role would be responsible for obtaining and updating content on a regular basis, as well as troubleshooting any issues. In particular, we are looking for people with a technical/developer background.

Fundraising Committee
Duties include event planning, once a month meetings, phone solicitations and coordination with vendors and donors, transportation of goods, event set up, assembling goodie bags, flyer distribution, silent auction solicitation and much more.

Photography & Videography
Take photos/videos of adoptable animals for our database and capture activities at our fundraisers and events.

Graphic Design
Help us design our marketing materials, ranging anywhere from brochures to signage to apparel.

Grant Coordinator
Prerequisites: Professional writing experience helpful. Knowledge of animal rescue community in Chicago helpful. Six month minimum commitment required. Great opportunity for someone looking to expand one’s professional writing skills!

Tasks include the following responsibilities:
